Transformer Enclosure – West London

Overview
Two transformers in West London required substation enclosures to mitigate noise being emitted into the surrounding environment. AGS’ solution comprised acoustic panels forming walls and a roof that met the required noise level reduction, complete with acoustic personnel doors. This is just one example of a high r’w enclosure that AGS can provide for several applications.
Noise control in locations like London where population density is so high is imperative. Ensuring that noise breakout from your site complies with the relevant environmental noise regulations can be essential to minimising noise complaints.
Our acoustic panels can range from 30-70dB Rw (lab-tested) giving AGS the ability to undertake virtually any project requiring a certain decibel reduction. Other options include fire-rated acoustic panels.
Our design team integrated all the systems and penetrations into the enclosure on the GA drawings through partnership with the client.
Construction
This is one of two enclosures built at the site by AGS. Both were almost 4.5m high and included 2no. single leaf hinged steel acoustic doors. These doors allowed access to the space for maintenance and other necessary activities without compromising the acoustic integrity of the enclosure.
Internally, there was supporting hot-dip galvanised structural steelwork. This transmitted loads to the concrete slab below. The interior face of the acoustic panels are perforated, rated as ‘Class A absorbers’ improving the acoustic environment within the space.
This brought together a clean finished solution with pre-coated exterior panel faces to a light grey colour.
Ventilation
Each room included low level air inlet attenuators and a high level extract fan and silencer. Calculations allowed us to derived a flow volume from the radiated heat inside the space.
Working in an environment around critical infrastructure and expensive equipment is no surprise to our installation engineers, with experience in live healthcare environments, school settings and active industrial spaces.
Challenges
The number of penetrations needed in the transformer enclosures to the external environment was considerable. Thanks to our directly employed site installation engineers, the piping/connections could be fitted through and then resealed through our acoustic modular panels onsite. Overall reducing risk of design or manufacturing holdups. As well as giving a client the longest time possible to confirm specific points that might penetrate the panels.
